In this case im going to go over the basics of how the tool works. Rather then jump into some character model I'll start with a cylinder. Grab the edges that make the top and bottom of the cylinder, as well as one vertical edge to connect them. Just think that you are going to flatten this like a can, but you don't want any folding.

Next, right click and go hardness>hard. (this will give you hard edges like
in maya or diffent smoothing groops)
Your lines should be Green now. If you hit tab you will see the hard edges.

Next go into "body mode" or whole object mode select the cylinder.
The hotkey for body mode is "B"
Right click and select UV Mapping>Direct. This will bring up a new window.
